7. The Do's and Don'ts of travelling to Laos

It is important for every foreigner travelling to Laos to know certain things that are classified as common practices in western countries are forbidden by law and culture in Laos. The Lao PDR is a communist dictatorship and whilst the majority of people are very friendly, the authorities are very serious in "maintaining the peace, harmony and unity of the Lao PDR". Observe the local customs and traditions and ask questions if you are doubtful. It may just save your life.

This list does not intend to be an exhaustive list but only as a simple guide.

  • Take off your shoes when entering any building in places of worship or people's houses.
  • If you are a woman, don't touch monk or religious statute as it is believed that you will desecrate the holiness.
  • Hand shake between man and woman is regarded as sexual gesture.
  • Pointing is rude and especially when pointing with your feet. Foreigners tend to cross their legs alot when sitting but to point the toe at another is a sign of disrespect.

  • Friends of the same sex may hold hands or appear to be close to each other when appearing together in public.
  • Certain places in the temple are only for men and women are not allowed to enter.
  • Always wear appropriate attire (shirt, long pants, long skirt e.g.) when attending or visiting temples or government offices.
  • Show the posture of inferior or respect (preferably to kneel down) or being in lower position when communicating with monk.
  • Kissing in public is regarded as an obscene act.
  • Pornography or explicit sexual materials are forbidden and even enshrine in the Criminal Code of Laos (Clause 127).
  • Adultery is a crime in Laos and carry a jail term for both parties (Clause 117 of the Criminal Code of Laos).

Fresh evidence to show the mass destruction of the Foreign Investment Project

They Tried to Hide the Truth!
    Source X Files: http://www.foreignprisoners.com

This report was compiled by Securicor [Laos] on 27 September 2000 … long before the Securicor Managers Kerry and Kay Danes were taken hostage and falsely convicted. A copy of the report was given in September 2000 to the Highest Government Officials in Laos as evidence to show that the Government authorities and AD Hoc Committee handling the Gem Mining Lao case, were corrupt and miss-representing the leadership of Laos, and that they deliberately ignored the Prime Minister's Directive No. 007/PM dated 17 July 2000 to secure Gem Mining Laos pending a full investigation.

Gem Mining Directors were accused by those same Lao authorities who failed to follow their Prime Minister's Directive… of causing this mass destruction.
