Hongsa Lignite Ltd. Co., (Lao-Thai joint venture) Hongsa Lignite is located
in the town of Hongsa, Udomxai Province northwest of Lao PDR 70 km from
Thai border at Thung Chang district, Nan Province. The company was granted
a concession to explore and exploit coal in Special-Region of Hongsa within
an area of 20 km. Their operations in Laos have been suspended by the Prime
Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra. He said that Thailand would meet
only half its commitment to buy electricity from Laos, suspending
additional purchases until demand and economic growth make the deals
worthwhile.
