Richey finally freed after 21 years
|
KENNY Richey has finally been freed by a US court after spending 21 years on death row.
As expected, Richey, who grew-up in Edinburgh, pleaded no contest to attempted involuntary manslaughter at the Putnam County Common Pleas Court in Ottawa, Ohio.
Richey, 43, was convicted in 1987 of an arson attack on an apartment block in an Ohio town in which a two-year-old girl died.
But in August last year the sentence was overturned and today he was sentenced to time already served.
Richey was expected to spend the night with his brother after being formally released before boarding a plane to Washington tomorrow. He is expected back in Edinburgh on Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier, his parents told how they feared for his health when he finally returns to Scotland.
The court appearance had to be postponed last month when he was taken ill, and his father Jim said he was hiding the extent of his health problems.
He said: "He's still having chest pains, but he's pretending to be OK until he gets back to Scotland. He wants to get back home. He's endured a lot of stress."
Kenny's mother, Eileen Richey, 63, is also concerned at how he will adjust to life in the Capital, where he is initially due to stay at her house in Dalry.
"Things have changed so much on the outside since Kenny was last in Scotland. It is going to be a real culture shock for him. There will be such a lot for him to adjust to so quickly. I am worried for him.
"Kenny hasn't had a drink in so long that one pint could absolutely floor him. It isn't that he is greedy with drink but he is going to have to be so careful.
"It does make me nervous how he will cope after so long in jail. Prison is a very macho environment and you can't show that you are scared.
"He will be scared. He will be scared after he is freed but he could find it hard to ask for help."
Richey has worked with Max Clifford to strike a £50,000 deal to sell his story.
