On May 19, 2004 four teenage girls and one teenage boy were killed as they
were searching for food by LPDR military forces in the Xaysomboune Special
Zone of Laos. The victims were tortured, shot, stabbed and the girls were
raped. The aftermath of this event was captured on videotape by Va Char
Yang.
This video can be viewed
by clicking here. The video is very graphic and should be viewed with discretion. It is
not suitable for children, pregnant women, and those with emotional
problems.
Allegations of such atrocities have been made by the U.S. Secret War
veterans and their families since 1975. Va Char Yang witnessed the
killings and took the video within a few hours of the attack. This video
has become the most significant evidence of the systematic genocide by the
communist government of Las of the Hmong, Mien, Lao, and Khmu that were
loyal to the United States during the war in Southeast Asia.
The Lao government has denounced the video as "fabricated" and not having
even occurred in Laos. Time Magazine used forensic experts to establish
the validity of the video. The video speaks for itself as to truth. A
few weeks before this atrocity happened, independent journalist Nelson
Rand visited the same group of people in the remote jungles of Laos. He
documented the plight of the Secret War veterans and their families. He
photographed among others the victims and their families prior to the
tragedy. He also met and photographed Va Char Yang with the leaders of
the people in the jungle. The Fact Finding Commission has those willing
to take an international fact finding team to the site of the killing of
these children as well as the mass graves where other incidents have
occurred. Expectations of the international community that these groups
voluntarily come out of the mountains and surrender are unrealistic in
light of this and other reported incidents. It is time the killing
stopped. It is time the Lao People's Democratic Republic work in good
faith toward a peaceful resolution of this issue.
