Foreign Prisoner Support Service responds to backlash from Corby Documentary
25 June 2008 - FPSS Administration

Australian Nine Network documentary on the Corby saga, Schapelle Corby: The Hidden Truth, aired on Tuesday night [24 June 2008]. As a result, the Foreign Prisoner Support Service has been inundated with thousands of emails overnight from our Australian FPSS support base.

95% of that feedback has been extremely derogatory and clearly unfavourable towards the Corby family and in particular, Schapelle Corby, detained in Kerobokan Prison.

FPSS has always promoted the view that when people are detained in foreign prisons, the best approach is always through diplomacy. Whether or not a prisoner or their family believe that they have been denied justice, or proper due process, they should always adopt a diplomatic approach that is respectful to authorities, particularly given the complexities and high emotions that are often associated with having a loved one detained in a foreign prison.

Unfortunately, the Corby case has generated a great deal of negative publicity for prisoners detained throughout the world, not just Australians detained in Bali.

According to the hundreds of emails recieved overnight, many FPSS members in Australia who have been supporting Schapelle Corby, have expressed strong feelings of being betrayed by her. Many now wish to withdraw their support completely from FPSS which is to the detriment of other families who have a desperate need for such support. This is understandable given those supporters have mostly based their support on the "innocence" or "guilt" factor.

A good lesson to learn from all this is what we have always encouraged; that people should base their support for prisoners more on a "humanitarian" factor - that despite innocence or guilt, we choose to support a prisoner because we care about others who have clearly lost their way, made the wrong choices, may have been denied justice or are treated unfairly, are in crisis, or simply need encouragement to endure an impossible situation for them.

"We hope that FPSS members will continue to help us achieve our main objectives to broaden everyone's understanding as to the benefits of "human rights principles and legislation" in accordance with those principles set out in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and other International Mandates" says Kay Danes, FPSS Advocate and author of best seller 'Families Behind Bars'.

The majority of the campaigns highlighted on FPSS do represent people who have committed an offence in a foreign country. Most of these prisoners admit to their crimes. Most of their families are consumed trying to support them through impossible situations, provide material and moral support, so necessary to the prisoner’s physical survival. FPSS has always held the belief that people who do wrong should be held accountable, that the punishment needs to fit the crime; that humans deserve to be treated fairly and in accordance with their civil and human rights.
