About Emmanuel Ihejirika

Emmanuel was arrested on January 14th 2004 at the age of 26. He has dual citizenship - Nigerian and Sierra Leonean. However, he has lived most of his life in Nigeria. The only surviving member of his immediate family is his mother who lives in a village in Nigeria.

He was arrested at the Soekarno Hatta International airport in Jakarta, Indonesia with 31 capsules of heroin. Emmanuel claims that he was arrested due to a tip off by his cousin who he was carrying this "assignment" for. He says that his cousin had wanted him to ingest more but Emmanuel was unable to.

Emmanuel was sentenced to death by firing squad and is currently in the maximum security block at the Kerobokan prison in Bali, Indonesia.

His sentence he claims is terribly harsh when compared to others who are currently serving lighter sentences but who were arrested with a higher amount of drugs on them. Furthermore, Emmanuel believes that his case has been tampered with and that he has been given someone else's sentence as the other person paid for the exchange. While he claims he has proof of this, he is without any funds whatsoever and therefore, these claims have never been able to be investigated. He has not been visited once by the Consulate. He feels that he has been forgotten. That his days are numbered and at any given time, he will be executed.

Emmanuel receives very few visitors. He is a bright thoughtful man who believes in God and prays diligently (which is the only thing that's holding him together), spends most of his time reading, speaks fluent English and has a knack for numbers.

The foreign prisoners at Kerobokan receive 4 slices of white bread and either a banana or a slice of papaya as their food for the whole day.

I have had the opportunity to spend lots of time with Emmanuel and have enjoyed his company. We talk about lots of things….he has hardly ever asked me for anything. He admits that what he did was wrong but he feels that he is serving someone else's sentence.

Update 1 June 2006

Life on death row is a constant anxious wait for Emmanuel who initially received life imprisonment in 2004 for smuggling 396.6 grams of heroin contained in 31 capsules in his stomach. When he appealed the verdict, the Bali high court increased his sentence to death. He is currently detained in Kerobokan Prison awaiting execution.

Emmanuel says that his health is okay but he thinks that he might be moving to the maximum security tower where death row prisoners await execution. Two other Australians are currently detained there [Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran]

Emmanuel has very little support from the outside world. He does not have visits from family or friends. By all accounts, he appears to be a young man who is forgotten not only by his country, but by the world. He is lost in the system and lives with little hope. FPSS respects the exclusive right of Indonesia to judge the guilt and/or innocence of prisoners, but hopes that Indonesia might spare this young man's life so that he might have an opportunity to redeem himself.

'I met Emmanuel when I visited the Kerobokan prison back in 2005. He was a quietly spoken young man, most sincere and grateful for the bar of soap and food supplies I gave him' says Kay Danes. 'I hope that his life is spared because I have faith in his ability to turn his life around. If only he has the chance to do so!'
