PRISON:

Casa Circondariale
Via Bassone
11 22100 Albate
(CO) Italy
Casa Circondariale di Como is a small prison in the North of Italy that like most of Italy's prisons has suffered severe overcrowding in recent years. Having originally been built for just 175 inmates, this figure is greatly exceeded year after year. The prison has seen a number of outbreaks of the infectious disease Q fever. This is a problem currently being addressed by authorities as well as the issue of refuse disposal that has also been the cause of infectious breakouts in the prison. The prison has suffered water shortages that affect hygiene in the prison. Showers are often limited and the usage of water for general cleaning has been scaled back. This has lead to some problems of cleanliness, however it is reported that the cooking areas are well maintained and cleaned. The prison is located near the city of Como 45km north of Milan. Como relies heavily on its industry to support its economy.
In recent years Como has become an international tourist destination.
With the focus being on Lake Como and the many large estates in the area.
Visiting days at the women's prison is on Tuesdays and Fridays. The last Friday of the month changes to Saturday [not sure why]. Visitors attend the front office of the prison, show some form of I.D and state the name of the person they wish to visit. At all times be respectful to authorities.

WRITE TO CARLY:
|
Carly's mother, Lyn, says Carly is in good spirits and is grateful for the support from FPSS, in particular, heartfelt thanks to Martin Hodgson, Senior FPSS advocate. Martin is in contact with Carly too and says that she is relatively upbeat considering her situation. Carly mostly needs money for food and basic toiletries that can be purchased at the prison canteen. If anyone would like to write to Carly then please do so at this address;Ms. Carly Morrisc/- Casa Circondariale Via Bassone 11 22100 Albate (CO) Italy If people wish to write to Carly and would like a reply, they need to send an "international coupon" that can be purchased from any Post Office. Otherwise Carly has to buy stamps at the prison and these are expensive. 'International Coupons' are only about AUD$2 each, so it is much better if people buy them as opposed to Carly using the little money she has to pay crazy amounts for stamps.

CARE PACKAGES:
|
The following is a list of FORBIDDEN ITEMS that must not be sent to the prison:
Any type of recording device Cigarettes of any kind or brand Pens, pencils, brushes of any kind or brand Spray containers of any kind and of any content Clothing hangers, except if entirely made of plastic Tubes (ie toothpaste, cream) of any kind and of any content Raw food of any kind, shelled dry fruit Stamps that have a value above 10 euros Bananas, zucchini, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, etc unless they have been sliced Cakes, sweets, biscuits, pastries, etc that may be difficult to inspect Any powdered substance (coffee, sugar, flour, detergent, grated cheese) Tinned or confectioned food (waxed-wrapped mini cheese, processed cheese slices) Medicine of any kind unless with a prescription Sausages of any kind (bologna, salami, hot dogs, unless sliced) Bread, pizza unless sliced, chewing gum, candy Pieces of cheese weighing 1 kilo or greater Thermos bottles, Any kind of lighters Stock cubes, Olives Vitamins, food supplements, cosmetics Pots, pans, crockery, dishes of any kind Bread sticks, crisp bread Wooden clogs Alcoholic beverages and liquids of any kind Batteries, ink, aluminium containers or foil Any kind of crustaceans unless shelled
Any items that might be used to harm another prisoner or prison official
[ie: weapons, sharp objects etc]
We don't have an 'APPROVED LIST' of items as yet but FPSS Senior Advocate
Martin Hodgson has confirmed that the text books he forwarded to Carly have been received by her.
What we do know is that from Lyn's last visit to her daughter,
she was able to take in food, biscuits and cake bought locally so long as
the packet was intact and contents could be viewed.
The cake and any fruit had to be sliced up.
These "rules" make sending things from Australia very difficult and limiting.
Things like toiletries must be purchased from the prison "canteen",
and quickly eat into her money. Any kind of vitamins or similar things,
ie: soy products as Carly is a vegetarian cannot be sent.

APPEAL FOR IN-COUNTRY SUPPORT:
|
Carly was visited by her family earlier this year [2006] but it is too expensive for them to visit her as often as they would like. Therefore, we need to establish local in-country support. If anyone reading this, lives locally in Como, Italy or who knows of someone who would be willing to visit Carly on a regular basis, please contact us. Despite the obvious frustrations, Lyn and David are continuing to hold up remarkably well throughout this ordeal but certainly, it is placing additional burdens on their already limited resources. If you wish to assist with any of the following then please contact us. Air tickets for Lyn to visit her daughter Financial support for Carly's daily needs [food] Financial assistance for legal fees, court costs and medical

| Update 23 October 2006
|
|
On 16 October 2006, FPSS advocate Martin Hodgson received a letter from Carly Morris . All seems to be going as well as possible given the situation. Carly appears to be coping reasonably well with the ups and downs of adjusting to prison life. Her appeal is still set for the 6th December 2006. Martin has finalised the case information for the appeal and compiled this in both English and Italian. He is forwarding this to Carly's lawyer this week. We remain optimistic for a positive outcome and appreciate the efforts of all those who are involved in this case.
